'Wow' - Rangers icon Ally McCoist reveals incredible phone call with Craig Whyte
Former Rangers manager and striker Ally McCoist has revealed an incredible phone call with former Gers owner Craig Whyte after the club had gone into administration – and admits he will “never forget his words.”
The club’s record goalscorer gave the staggering insight into the “carnage” at Ibrox in the days after the Light Blues entered administration as the Gers lurched from crisis to crisis.
McCoist said he had phoned the absent owner to find out what was going on with the Gers, only to be told it would all be over within a “couple of days.”
“The one thing, if you’re involved in football long enough, you’ll know what I’m talking about…you can smell it,” McCoist told Open Goal‘s Si Ferry, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“You can smell it a mile away. There were things happening. I remember one Friday night…the club had just gone into administration.
“We could see it – we knew it was happening. I was sitting in the house. We had a game on the Saturday. I had a glass a wine and my mother was there, and the family. I thought, ‘I’m phoning him – I’m phoning Craig Whyte’.

“So I phoned him and usual, one ring, brilliant, bang.
“He goes, ‘Alistair, how are you?’
“I went, ‘Well it might come as a wee shock to you Craig, funnily enough, not so good – it’s carnage here. People are losing their jobs, you obviously know the club’s in administration. Can you enlighten us? What’s going to happen? Can you give us any information?’
“I’ll never forget his words.
“He said, ‘I know Alistair, you’re absolutely spot on. I reckon another couple of days with the tin hats on and we’ll get through this’.
“Wow.”
The Light Blues are still feeling the effects of Whyte’s catastrophic time in charge and are still waiting to win their first major trophy following Whyte’s reign.
Charles Green would later purchase the assets fro liquidators after HMRC voted against a CVA to allow the club to come out of administration without the formation of a new company.
Football Insider verdict:
There’s litte that can be said about Whyte’s time in charge that hasn’t been said 1000 times before. The damage the former Gers owner has done to the Light Blues will linger for years to come and there’s nothing that comes out now from former staff regarding they utterly shambolic way in which the Light Blues were operated then that is in any way surprising.
