McGinn tipped to answer Man United call after Aston Villa stance confirmed – pundit
Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn would be tempted by a potential move to Man United, according to Kevin Phillips.
The former England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 27-year-old could push to depart Villa if the Red Devils “come calling”.
As reported by The Telegraph (17 January), Man United have shortlisted McGinn as they prepare an attempt to prise the midfielder away from Villa Park this summer.
As quoted by the Manchester Evening News (22 January), manager Steven Gerrard insisted Villa are not a “selling club” but stopped short of ruling out a sale if a “Jack Grealish situation” arises.
Phillips claimed Gerrard could hold the key to keeping the Scotland international at Villa Park.
“It’s such a tough one,” he told Football Insider.
“As much as I wouldn’t want him to leave, it’s hard. As I’ve always said before, when someone like that comes calling, I think the player would want to go.
“At the end of the day, it’s Man United. That’s no slight on any club.
“When they come knocking – you’ve just got to think: ‘Am I going to get another opportunity to play for Man United?’
“The answer for McGinn would probably be no.
“I hope he does stay because he looks happy playing under Steven Gerrard. I think the only way you keep him if United do come in is the lure of playing for Gerrard.”
42-cap Scotland midfielder McGinn is out of contract at Aston Villa in June 2025.

The former Hibernian star has contributed three goals and two assists in 18 Premier League games this term.
McGinn has played 130 games for the Midlands side since joining in 2018.
