McGinn tipped to reach 'next level' at Aston Villa after footage emerges today - Phillips

Kevin Phillips has tipped new Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard to take John McGinn’s game “to the next level”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Claret and Blue expects McGinn, 27, will be “itching” to pick his gaffer’s brains about football.

Villa confirmed the appointment of Gerrard on a three-and-a-half year contract last Thursday.

As shown by footage from Sky Sports today, the ex-Liverpool captain has arrived at Villa’s training base for his first day of training.

Phillips expects the Villa squad are “very excited” to get going under their new manager.

“I think he’ll be excited more than most to work with Gerrard,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Every player in that Villa camp will be very excited to work under Steven. They will want to see how he works.

“It’s a different voice and his staff will put on different training sessions.

“Ultimately, Villa have brought in an absolute legend of the game. The players will be in awe of him when he walks through the door. Steve has a presence about him.

“Automatically, players want to play for him and given him that extra 10 per cent.

“If I a midfielder in that Villa team I would be itching to pick his brains. I would want to ask him how he became one of the best Premier League players of all time.

“McGinn can certainly benefit from Steven going in there. He could go the next level.”
