‘McGregor rates him highly’ – Exclusive: Rangers open new deal talks, ex-Ger reacts
Alan Hutton claims that Rangers goalkeeper Robby McCrorie is in line to become a first-team option for Steven Gerrard as the club open contract talks at Ibrox.
The former Gers and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the shot-stopper could be Allan McGregor’s understudy after learning his trade on loan this season.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Light Blues have opened talks with the 22-year-old over tying him to new long-term deal at Ibrox.
The keeper is one of the most highly-rated young players in Scotland and has spent this season on loan at both Queen of the South and Livingston this term.
With Jak Alnwick and Wes Foderingham both set to leave Ibrox this summer, Hutton believes McCrorie could be set for a promotion up the ranks in the first team.
Hutton told Football Insider: “He’s very highly rated, obviously Allan McGregor rates him highly and I trust his judgement, he’s a top goalkeeper so he knows what he’s talking about.
“There’s been a lot of press about McCrorie, about teams watching him and stuff. He’s went out on loan and done well, really raised the bar for himself so it doesn’t surprise me Rangers are looking to tie him down.
“Obviously the situation with the other two keepers (Foderingham and Alnwick) possibly moving on and McGregor, as good as he is, he’s not getting any younger, Rangers will be looking to the future and what direction they’re going to go in.
“It suits them best in they have a number one in Allan McGregor and he’s been fantastic. Long-term they’ll be looking for a future number one.
“From a Rangers point of view it’s about tying him down and holding onto him because he looks to be one for the future.”
McCrorie has played eight times in the Premiership for Livingston this season, while he is yet to feature for Rangers.
