Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has the makings to become a “superstar” for Tottenham, according to Alex McLeish.
The former Premier League and Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has admitted he questioned whether the 25-year-old has the quality to hit the expected heights in north London in his early days at the club.
The summer signing from Southampton has been an ever-present for Jose Mourinho in the Premier League this season, while he has also featured in all three of the Lilywhites’ Europa League group games.
He played a crucial role in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Manchester City, with the three points lifting Spurs to the top of the Premier League table.
McLeish has revealed he was not totally convinced by the Denmark international’s opening performances for Tottenham but insisted he was happy to have been proven wrong by the midfielder.
McLeish told Football Insider: “The problem when you bring new players and when players don’t quite hit the ground running, it becomes very difficult for them with the fans, although there’s none there, and the expectation levels.
“Hojbjerg, in the beginning, he just looked a wee bit leggy but you see he could be a bulldozer at times but he’s also got a finesse. These recent performances I’ve been so impressed with him.
“In the early days, I thought is he that level? And clearly he is, he’s an international player, but to be elevated to Tottenham Hotspur and to be a superstar there is a big ask.
“I think he’s got all the makings of that and what a role he plays.”
Hojbjerg has played 15 times for Spurs so far and has a total of 118 Premier League appearances under his belt.
