McLeish Exclusive: Spurs 27-yr-old likely facing axe after huge transfer development

Alex McLeish has warned Ben Davies he faces being a backup option at Tottenham if he fails to up his game ahead of the arrival of Sergio Reguilon.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the 27-year-old has not performed at his previous high standards for a couple of years.

As revealed by Football Insider, Tottenham have agreed a fee of £28million including add-ons to sign the 23-year-old from the Spanish giants.

The Spain international spent last season on loan at Sevilla where he made 38 appearances and helped the club win the Europa League.

McLeish believes that Davies has not delivered to the best of his capabilities in recent seasons and insists the prospective new arrival must kick him back into gear if he wants to keep his place in the starting XI.

Asked if he thought the Wales star needed competition at left-back, McLeish told Football Insider: “Aye, yeah, I think he does. You wouldn’t say Ben’s been at the level that he was two or three years ago.

“So either he needs a jag of this pressure on him or else he’s going to be the backup man to Reguilon if he hits the ground running.”

Davies has been Jose Mourinho’s firm first-choice left-back at Spurs and he started all but one game following his return from an ankle injury last season.

He was named among the starting XI who lost 1-0 to Everton on the opening day of the current campaign.
