McLeish: Rangers tipped for major change after Giovanni van Bronckhorst confession

Rangers may line up in a back three domestically after its success in Europe, according to Alex McLeish.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Rangers and Scotland boss claimed the formation helped Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side dominate despite losing 3-0 to Napoli last week (14 September).

John Lundstram moved back from midfield to line up in a back three alongside Connor Goldson and Jamie Sands who was eventually sent off against Napoli.

As quoted by club media after the game, Van Bronckhorst admitted he still had concerns over his defence.

The 47-year-old converted back to a four-man defence for the 2-1 win over Dundee United at the weekend (17 September).

Leon King partnered Goldson against United as he made his first league start for his boyhood club.

“He changed the formation to the three at the back,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Perhaps Giovanni might think about that for the domestic league because there were times when they had Napoli back in their own box.

“Far from the critics saying that Napoli, after beating Liverpool, were going to be absolutely dominant. They weren’t dominant. [Victor] Osimhen was missing, he’s different gravy.

“But Rangers did come out of the traps really well and that’s what the supporters want. They want that commitment, they want that technical level of the teams they are facing in this group.

“I think they can still get results given that they beat PSV Eindhoven to get here. Eindhoven are not a million miles away from Ajax.

“Why did we do what did to PSV and then give that insipid performance against Ajax? The Napoli game atoned a little bit although the 3-0 defeat was sore to take, especially when McGregor saves two penalties.”
