McLeish reveals Dyche chat as Aston Villa plot major bid for ‘tremendous’ McNeil
Burnley winger Dwight McNeil would be a “tremendous” signing for Aston Villa, according to Alex McLeish.
The former Villa boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, revealed he made enquiries about the 21-year-old’s eligibility to play for Scotland when he managed the national side.
As revealed by Football Insider, McNeil is one of Villa’s top targets and they are plotting a huge bid this summer.
Dean Smith was already in the market for two new wide forwards before it was revealed Trezeguet will be out of action for a year.
McLeish admitted he had kept a close eye on McNeil during his time in the Scotland job and even spoke to Sean Dyche about a possible call-up.
He insisted the left-footed attacker would be an exciting addition to the Aston Villa squad.
“I like Dwight McNeil,” McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“When I was in the Scotland job I got a wee nod that he could be eligible for Scotland. I got in touch with Sean Dyche and then I heard it wasn’t possible.
“It would be interesting to find, for Scotland’s sake, his family situation.
“He absolutely burst on the scene, tremendous looking young prospect, and he’s now a regular.”
McNeil already has 92 appearances, seven goals and 16 assists under his belt in the Premier League.
He has played 36 times across all competitions this season, with two goals and five assists to his name.
The left-winger signed a new contract with Burnley last October that runs until 2024.
However, the Clarets have the option to extend the deal by a further year.
