McLeish: 'Tremendous' Townsend will surprise Everton fans after what 'I've heard'

Alex McLeish has tipped Andros Townsend to surprise any sceptical Everton fans with his performances.

The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the “tremendous” winger would silence his doubters at Goodison Park.

Everton confirmed on Tuesday (July 20th) the 30-year-old had joined on a free transfer and signed a two-year contract

The England international was available after his contract at Crystal Palace came to an end.

McLeish revealed he had heard some Everton fans were unhappy with the winger’s arrival at Goodison Park.

However, he insisted Townsend is “at his peak” and backed him to spring a surprise.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think it’s one of these no-brainers.

“I’ve heard some Everton fans are not happy about it. Any same I’ve seen Andros see a really consistent and really nice footballer who can penetrate defences.

“He links up with his teammates well, he will do the hard graft as well, running back, closing down.

“Bringing a very experienced man at this particular stage of his career into the squad, I don’t see why that’s not a good selection.

“He’s at his peak and I believe he is a tremendous pro. He’s got years ahead of him as well so good luck to Andros.

I’ve always liked his style of play and it’s a good buy for me. It’s a good acquisition.”

Townsend has played 243 times in the Premier League, with 22 goals and 33 assists to his name.

He made 34 league appearances for Palace last season but only scored once.
