Jackie McNamara says that Rangers could cash in on defender Borna Barisic this summer, just a year after signing the Croatian.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider the former Scotland international insisted that the left back has not lived up to expectation during his first season at Ibrox and that he could be heading out the exit door in order to free up funds for Steven Gerrard to sign a replacement.
The 26-year-old arrived at Ibrox in the summer of 2018 from Osijek after playing against Rangers for the Croatian side in the Europa League but McNamara insists he has not done enough to convince in Scotland.
Asked about Rangers’ left back options in an exclusive interview with Football Insider he said: “I don’t think Jon Flanagan will play left back very often. I think he was in there covering for Barisic.
“He (Barisic) hasn’t really cut it at Rangers in his first season, whether or not they want to change him remains to be seen. He did well against Rangers in the Europa League and that’s when they bought him.
“They might want to cash in on him to get some of their money back to try and get somebody else in.”
Barisic ended up playing just 22 times for the Gers in his debut campaign at Ibrox, injury problems leaving him sidelined at various stages of the season.
He featured in only three of the Light Blues’ last 12 Premiership games, with Jon Flanagan Gerrard’s preferred option on the right hand side of the defence.
