Former Wolves star Jackie McNamara has questioned whether the club should be trying to sign West Brom hitman Salomon Rondon despite his impressive season at Newcastle United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider the ex-Scotland international insisted that he would rather keep the squad size small and with the majority of players who helped the Molineux outfit to finish seventh on their return to the top flight, qualifying for the Europa League qualifiers as a result.
Wolves have been reported by the Chronicle [19:31] to have been in talks with Rondon’s agent as they look to bolster their centre forward options, having seen the Venezuelan net 11 Premier League goals at Newcastle in the 2018/19 campaign.
However, McNamara insists that he would rather Jimenez as his first choice over Rondon, although admitted that the Newcastle loanee would offer fierce competition for the Mexican ace.
Asked whether he’d rather have Jimenez over Rondon leading the line at Molineux next season, the former Wolves man told Football Insider: “Yeah, I would, aye, because he’s done it for Wolves.
“I’m not sure (I want Rondon at Wolves) because you want to keep the lads there that are happy and have done well last season. You don’t want to unsettle things.
“It will be very interesting to see what they do, if they do bring someone like that in for more competition. I think what they had last season, it will be good coming back into it with the same group, maybe add one or two.”
Jimenez, who signed on loan from Benfica before turning his move permanent, scored 13 Premier League goals for Wolves during his first season at Molineux, adding another four FA Cup strikes to his tally.
