Medical booked: Rangers grant Edmundson permission to discuss terms with Ipswich – Sources

George Edmundson is heading to Ipswich Town for a medical and to complete a move from Rangers, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

This site revealed that the Light Blues have accepted a bid of around £1million in total for the centre-back, 23, from Ipswich.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Rangers have now given Edmundson permission to undergo a medical at the League One club and hold talks over personal terms.

Negotiations are expected to result in a total agreement and allow the defender to return to England after two years north of the border.

Ipswich have won the race for Edmundson after seeing off competition from a number of EFL clubs.

Championship new boys Peterborough United had an offer for Edmundson rejected and Derby County have enquired about a new loan.

Edmundson spent the second half of last season on loan at Wayne Rooney’s side as they narrowly avoided relegation.

That helped reignite the career of the defender, who struggled to break into the Rangers team during his two years at the club.

The prospect of a regular role diminished even further after he was hit with a long-term suspension for breaching Covid rules by attending a party last November.

Rangers then signed Jack Simpson from Bournemouth in January to further increase competition for places at centre-back.

The return of Nikola Katic after a year out with a knee injury has convinced Gerrard and the Ibrox hierarchy to cash in on Edmundson.

Connor Goldson and Filip Helander are the first choice pairing, while Leon Balogun, 33, signed a one-year contract extension in April.

In other news, Alan Hutton can’t believe the “sensational” player that Rangers have signed.
