Birmingham City are set to announce the signing of West Brom midfielder Rekeem Harper after he passed a medical on Wednesday, Football Insider can reveal.
The 20-year-old Englishman is making the short journey to St Andrew’s on loan for the rest of the season.
A Birmingham source has told Football Insider that the deal is all but done after Harper passed his medical tests.
Intriguingly, the Blues will not pay a loan fee for the highly-rated youngster.
That represents a major coup for the Championship club given the interest in Harper’s signature in this window.
Multiple second-tier sides have registered their interest in the youngster, who has been deemed surplus to requirements for West Brom’s Premier League relegation battle.
He has had just 31 minutes of Premier League playing time this season and most of the little first-team action he has had has come in the EFL Cup.
Manager Sam Allardyce has given the green light for Harper to head out on loan in a move that frees up space in his squad.
Harper, who has a contract at West Brom that runs until 2022, has played 42 times for the club since graduating from their youth ranks.
He played a bit part role under Slaven Bilic in the club’s promotion winning campaign, often deputising for first-choice midfield pair Romaine Sawyers and Jake Livermore.
Harper previously had a League One loan spell with Blackburn Rovers under former Albion boss Tony Mowbray when Albion were last in the Premier League.
He played nine matches in three different competitions before returning to The Hawthorns in January 2018.
