Tottenham appear to have missed out on signing Celta Vigo midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that Diop, 20, is on the verge of joining Ligue 1 side Lyon after the European giants outbid Spurs by £12.8million.
It is understood that the La Liga ace is now scheduled to undergo a medical with Lyon, who offered £13.8million plus £9million in add-ons, after he arrived in France on Sunday.
Tottenham’s eight-figure bid for the Spain Under-19 international is said to have been worth £10million.
The Daily Mail adds that Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of Diop and was eager to get the signing sealed, however after missing out on the midfielder, he is now pursuing other midfielder and attacking options.
Diop made 19 appearances across all competitions for Celtic Vigo last season, scoring one goal in the process which came in a La Liga win over Granada.
Football Insider Verdict
Diop would have been a bit of a risk for Tottenham. He has a lot of potential but he hasn’t earned enough first-team experience for him to be worth as much as Lyon are paying for him, so it’s totally understandable that the London club didn’t match their offer. Diop started just five games in La Liga last season and if Spurs want to add strength in depth, they need to bring in players that have a much better understanding of the game. Diop may be worth a lot more money in a couple of years’ time, but right now, it just didn’t make sense for Tottenham to spend too much on him. It may seem like a good decision in the long run if he fails to prove his worth in France.
