Medical today: Newcastle set sights on new left-back signing after Gosens talks collapse – Sources

Newcastle United have lost out to Inter Milan in the race to sign Robin Gosens as he finalises a move on Thursday, Football Insider understands.

The 27-year-old is set to undergo an Inter medical today (27 January) and put the finishing touches to a deal worth over £20milion.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that a deal is agreed between Inter and Gosen’s club Atalanta, and the player has settled personal terms.

That is a blow to Newcastle, who have held talks with Gosens over a deal as they look to recruit a new left-back.

The Magpies have now turned their attentions elsewhere.

Eddie Howe is looking to sign several defenders this month in a bid to shore up his backline.

He identified Gosens as a prime target and Newcastle held discussions over a potential move to St James’ Park.

However, talks between the parties did not lead to a deal being struck.

The Germany international is in line to complete a move to Inter.

It is another blow to Newcastle, who have managed to sign just two players this month.

The Magpies currently have Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett as their recognised senior left-backs.

Natural right-back Javier Manquillo has also filled in on the left-hand flank on occasion.

Howe has already added Kieran Trippier to his ranks and is still looking for more reinforcements at the back.

As revealed by Football Insider today, Newcastle are preparing to launch a fresh bid for Brighton’s Dan Burn.

The Magpies saw their initial £8million bid knocked back by the Seagulls.
