Confirmed: 24-year-old undergoes medical ahead of Aston Villa exit

Serie A side Fiorentina has confirmed that Jordan Veretout has undergone a medical with them ahead of his Aston Villa exit.

La Viola announced on their official Twitter account on Tuesday morning that the 24-year-old was having “ongoing medical examinations” with the club.

Veretout spent last season on loan in Ligue 1 with St. Etienne and the Birmingham Mail has recently reported that he was set to make his move to the French side permanent after agreeing a four-year deal.

It is said that Aston Villa had accepted an offer of £4.5million for the midfielder, despite splashing £9million to pry him from Nantes, who were also interested in signing the player, in 2015.

The Frenchman helped St. Etienne reach the knock-out stages of the Europa League during his loan spell last term and made 43 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and supplying five assists.

However it appears that Veretout has chosen Fiorentina as his next destination, having featured just 29 times for Aston Villa in his two years at the club.

Steve Bruce has been quite active in the transfer window so far, but is yet to splash any considerable sum on new players with John Terry, Sam Johnstone, Ahmed Elmohamady, Glenn Whelan and Chris Samba being their new arrivals.

Veretout is one of plenty of players that were bought in before Dr Tony Xia took control of the club that has flopped. The Frenchman showed in the Premier League that he really isn’t suited to English football, but then his loan stint at St. Etienne last term proved fruitful. This transfer shows that Villa are still paying the price for what was the poor ownership of Randy Lerner and his board members. The loss on Veretout is too big for a team that is struggling to buy players this summer, but at least Bruce will have his transfer budget slightly improved by the 24-year-old’s sale.
