Medical underway: Newcastle striker on the verge of switching clubs - reliable journalist

By Danny Wright

Ivan Toney is on the verge of leaving Newcastle on loan for a second season in a row, according to a reliable journalist.

Bleacher Report journalist Dean Jones claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that the 21-year-old was having a medical with League One side Wigan ahead of a temporary switch to the DW Stadium.

The Newcastle Chronicle has recently reported that the Magpies have ordered Wigan to pay the entirety of Toney’s wages while his spends the duration of the 2017/18 campaign in their squad.

It was understood that Newcastle were happy to let the striker leave St. James’ Park on temporary terms in order for him to earn first-team experience.

Toney spent last season on loan with both Shrewsbury and Scunthorpe, with the latter’s manager Graham Alexander declaring an interest in re-signing the Toon youngster after he helped his side reach the League One play-offs.

However it appears that Wigan have won the race for the former Northampton ace, who is clearly nowhere near to breaking into Rafa Benitez’s first-team plans any time soon following his side’s promotion to the Premier League.

Football Insider Verdict

Toney looks to be moving in the right direction in terms of what clubs he is playing for. Last season saw him switch relegation-threatened Shrewsbury to high-flying Scunthorpe, where he even found the net in the play-off semi-final loss to Millwall at the back end of the campaign. Wigan are arguably one of the strongest teams in League One following their relegation in the 2016/17 season, so Toney could be leading the line of a team that could score around 100 goals over the course of the next year. Newcastle probably had a few offers for the 21-year-old but it appears that a very good choice has been made by whoever has seen the deal come to fruition.
