Medical underway: Everton on the verge of senior player deal – Sky journalist

By Danny Wright

Everton are on the verge of selling Aiden McGeady to Sunderland, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky Sport News’ north east correspondent Keith Downie claimed on his personal Twitter account on Thursday afternoon that the 31-year-old is currently undergoing a medical ahead of a deal to move to the Stadium of Light.

It is understood that Bury attacker James Vaughan is close to completing his move to Wearside and is said to be in discussions over personal terms.

Senior player McGeady looks as though he has no future at Goodison Park, despite impressing out on loan with Preston in the Championship last season.

He scored eight goals and supplied nine assists for North End in 34 appearances in the second tier last term, and impressed Simon Grayson so much that it looks as though he wants to reunite with him in his new job at Sunderland.

The Liverpool Echo has previously reported that Everton are in line to make a decent profit on McGeady, who signed for the Mersyesiders from Spartak Moscow for a low fee in January 2014.

In total, the Irish winger has made 43 appearances across all competitions for the Toffees, but has scored just one goal in what has been a largely unimpressive spell.

Football Insider Verdict

Ronald Koeman still has some work to do in order to shift out all the dead wood at Goodison Park, but getting McGeady off the wage bill is a good start as it is reported he was earning £40,000-a-week. Everton have been very busy in the transfer market and are about to go into the upcoming season with almost an entirely new looking squad. Romelu Lukaku’s sale saw the Merseyside club recoup almost all of their losses while Ross Barkley could be sold in the near future as he has entered the final year of his contract. McGeady will no doubt be a good signing for Sunderland. The Black Cats have to try to secure an instant return to the Premier League and the Irishman could be key in doing just that.

In other Everton news, one of the Blues’ league rivals has confirmed a major development in their pursuit of this 27-year-old.
