Sources: Mendes speaks to Edens and Sawiris over stunning Nuno to Aston Villa deal after Wolves exit
Jorge Mendes has spoken to the Aston Villa owners about the possibility of ex-Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo taking over at Villa Park, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The Midlands giants are not actively looking for a new manager to replace Dean Smith following their 11th-place Premier League finish in the season just finished.
But a well-placed Villa source has told Football Insider that super-agent Mendes has had talks with billionaire owners Wes Edens and Naseef Sawiris about Nuno.
Edens and Sawiris are hugely ambitious and will bankroll more major spending this summer on new signings as they look to establish Villa as a top-six team.
Smith may well start next season in the dugout but will come under huge pressure for his job in the autumn period if they do not start the new campaign well.
This site broke the news on 10th May that Mendes, widely regarded as the world’s most powerful agent, was looking to find a new club for Nuno and Villa were in his sights.
Wolves announced 11 days later that the Portugese coach’s four-year spell at the club was to come to an immediate end.
It would certainly be a sensational move were Nuno to take over at Villa Park.
The ambitious and big-spending club are regarded as a strong option for the 47-year-old, who oversaw the most successful period in Wolves’ modern history.
Nuno has also been linked with elite jobs on the Continent, but is not a contender for the vacant Tottenham post.
Football Insider revealed on 8th April that the Midlands giants have a “strong interest” in luring Steven Gerrard from Rangers and the masterplan is to regularly push for a top-four spot in the coming seasons.
Mendes has a reputation for being one step ahead of everyone else and has a remarkable track record of securing the best deal and move for his clients.
