Captains axed, four from Liverpool and Everton make cut: Merseyside and Manchester best combined XI
By Emma Sanders
Ahead of the Premier League’s “Super Sunday” fixtures which sees Manchester City take on Everton and Manchester United take on Liverpool, Football Insider has selected the best combined XI from the two areas.
The two Merseyside clubs have bags of history but the Manchester teams have dominated in recent years and they have more representatives in the combined XI too.
There are just four players from Merseyside as Everton’s star striker Romelu Lukaku misses out .
Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines are the only Everton players to get the nod in the full-back roles, while Joel Matip and Philippe Coutinho make the cut for the Reds.
A whole host of stars including Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino, Kevin De Bruyne, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Juan Mata miss out, as well as all four club captains – Wayne Rooney, Jordan Henderson, Vincent Kompany and Phil Jagielka.

Sergio Aguero is the striker to get the nod up front despite some serious competition and the Argentine is supported in attack by teammate David Silva who plays in a central attacking midfield role.
Henrik Mkhitaryan and Coutinho complete the front line, while Manchester duo Paul Pogba and Fernandinho fill the holding midfield positions.
Coleman is joined in defence by Merseyside representative Matip and his Everton teammate Leighton Baines gets the nod ahead of Luke Shaw.
Manchester United duo Eric Bailly and David De Gea complete the back line as not a single player from Manchester City is included in defence.
In other Liverpool news, Jurgen Klopp has been handed a major boost ahead of the clash against United.
