Merson: This is where reported Tottenham target should play next season

By Matt Farr

Paul Merson has urged Wilfried Zaha to snub interest from Tottenham this summer and remain at Crystal Palace.

Zaha, 24, has been in stunning form this season, despite Crystal Palace’s ongoing flirtations with the Premier League relegation zone.

He has scored six goals and supplied 11 assists from 30 appearances, triggering reported interest in his services from high-flying Tottenham.

The brilliant winger ripped Arsenal to shreds in the recent 3-0 victory at Selhurst Park on Monday night, but Merson thinks it would be best for his career if he stayed put this summer.

In his column for the Daily Star, Merson urged him to sign a new contract at the club that deserves credit for making him the player he is today.

He said: “Wilfried Zaha should stay at Crystal Palace. He hardly kicked a ball at Manchester United when he joined them before.

“Sign a new contract and stay at the club that made you. Zaha is comfortable there and he’s near his family. The fans love him. It’s all set up for him.

“He suits Palace. How many other teams play with out and out wingers? Tottenham don’t.”

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be keen on bringing the winger to White Hart Lane this summer to strengthen his options out wide.

He splashed out £30million on flop Moussa Sissoko last summer, but the France international has proven to be a waste of money.

The Tottenham chief will be looking to Zaha to do what Sissoko has failed to achieve if he were to arrive in north London ahead of next season in a lucrative switch.

But Merson does not think he would get enough first team action at Tottenham, echoing his miserable spell at Manchester United in 2013.
