Heckingbottom joins Leeds despite just signing a new contract with Barnsley, who are currently 21st in the Championship.
In a statement released on their official Twitter page, they said they were “shocked” at his decision to leave.
Former Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen was sacked on Sunday night after a terrible run of results had left his side stranded outside the play-off places.
Heckingbottom and his new backroom team of three staff will be tasked with getting the club back into the Premier League.
Heckingbottom has an 18-month contract so if all goes well he should get two shots at the ultimate prize.
