‘Mikel Arteta sack verdict as Arsenal board review chances of success’

Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG at the semi-final stage and questions have been asked about whether Mikel Arteta is the right man to take the Gunners forward.

Arteta’s Arsenal side were beaten 2-1 on the night at the Parc des Princes and 3-1 on aggregate, with their exit from the competition ensuring another trophyless season.

It was their second semi-final exit of the campaign after they were beaten in the Carabao Cup last four by eventual winners Newcastle United.

Since they won the FA Cup in 2020, Arsenal have not picked up major silverware, falling short on a number of occasions.

The Gunners look could finish runners-up in the Premier League for the third consecutive season after failing to properly challenge title-winners Liverpool.

Arteta should get another ‘spin of the wheel’

Some Gunners fans are questioning whether Arteta is the right man to take Arsenal to the next level after another season without silverware.

As he comes to the end of his sixth season in charge of the club, he only has one major trophy to show for his efforts.

However, speaking live on air, talkSPORT (8 May) Simon Jordan believes he should be given another chance, saying: “I still think there is enough margin in the conversation for Arteta to be given another spin of the wheel.

“If you’re in that boardroom, and you’re seeing the progress in your club, you’re seeing the blooding of young kids that have come in this season, that we’ve seen make first-team debuts, there’s enough strength in the reasons why you would want to have another look at what he (Arteta) can achieve for another year.”

However, despite believing Arteta should be given another year at the helm, Jordan feels that he is still to blame for some of the failures this season.

He said: “I do think they’ve missed an opportunity this season. I thought Arsenal would win the league this year, and think they could and should have done, and maybe their transfer policy is one of the reasons why they didn’t, and Arteta is part of that.”

Arteta must win something next season

Football Insider Verdict

There is no doubt that Arteta has drastically improved Arsenal’s squad since he took charge in 2019, and when you look back at the side that he inherited, the contrast is dramatic.

He has brought in better players in almost every position, and now has a starting XI which is among one of the best in the world.

However, the Spaniard is in a role that is judged solely on results, and if he doesn’t bring silverware back to the Emirates next season, then his job will be in danger.

Players like Odegaard have seen their Arsenal form fall off a cliff, and Arteta needs to ensure that his star men are on top form for the whole season, rather than just parts of it.

Of course, to win a trophy next season, the Gunners will have to make moves in the transfer market to strengthen their squad and ensure that they bring in a top-class striker to fire them to success.
