Mills: Aston Villa could be 'absolutely sensational' as January transfer plan revealed
Steven Gerrard is a “stellar name” and could attract top-class players to Aston Villa, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England defender insisted Gerrard will have to get Villa playing before January if he wants to spend big in the transfer market.
The 41-year-old replaced Dean Smith last week with Villa on a run of five consecutive Premier League defeats and just two points separating them from the relegation zone.
A club source told Football Insider (November 12) Gerrard will be given “huge” funds to bolster his squad in January.
Asked what the ceiling is for Gerrard at Villa given he will be backed, Mills told Football Insider Connor Whitley: “It depends on the owners, how much money you have and the recruitment.
“Frank Lampard did a great job with coaching the youngster and coaching what they had [at Chelsea]. But when you’ve got to buy players for big money and big expectations it becomes a little bit trickier.

“It’s a gamble for both. It could be absolutely sensational with money to spend, he’s a stellar name and he’s done OK so far at Rangers but we don’t know how he’s going to work out week in, week out in the Premier League.
“Players want to play, they want to play a team that plays good football, they want to play for a good manager who is fair and for a team that is doing well.
“If he goes in there and starts doing well before the transfer window and people see an improvement, that’s the most important thing.
“A name pricks your ears up, a name like Steven Gerrard will grab your attention but he’s got to prove what he’s worth on the training ground and dugout.”
