Bamford injury update is great news ahead of Leeds clash v Southampton - Mills

Patrick Bamford is one of Marcelo Bielsa’s most important players and it is vitally important he returns to action for Leeds United.

That is the view of ex-Whites and England defender Danny Mills, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Bamford’s role in Bielsa’s system.

The striker has missed Leeds’ last two Premier League games with an ankle injury he picked up against Newcastle United last month.

The Yorkshire giants picked up their first win of the season against Watford without their number nine.

Bamford told the club’s official podcast his injury was “nothing massive” and the latest is he will return to full training in mid-October.

Leeds travel to Southampton in their first game after the international break before Premier League games with Wolves and Norwich City before the end of the month.

“Bamford has become integral to the way Leeds play,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He won’t necessarily suit all teams and all styles of play but the way they Leeds play, he’s very integral to the style that they have.

“It’s important that he comes back because there is no better player that understands that position, for Leeds, than Patrick Bamford.”

Bamford has scored once and provided two assists in his five Premier League appearances this term.

The 28-year-old scored 17 times in 38 top-flight games last season, including 37 starts.

That form led to his first England call up at the beginning of this season but he missed out on the current squad because of his injury.

In other news, Leeds United have been tipped to sign a midfielder in January after a “massive” Phil Hay update.
