Danny Mills is in no doubt Leeds United are making the right move in offering Illan Meslier a new long-term contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Whites defender claimed his agent Xavier Fleury had played the game well after publicly claiming there were “big clubs” interested in his client.
Football Insider broke the news on Wednesday (31st March) that Leeds have no intention of selling the goalkeeper and instead will offer him a new deal with a pay hike.
It comes after Fleury told the LUFC fanzone podcast in February the 21-year-old was attracting the attention of top European clubs.
“There’s a surprise! Look at that,” Mills joked to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“Was there really any interest from anybody else? Probably not, would be my answer. Did anybody put in a firm bid? Probably not is the answer. Has his agent spoken to one or two people, just in case? Maybe.
“Again, it’s a charade. It’s playing that game. It’s what a lot of people do, it’s what agents are there for. Rightly or wrongly, it’s the way things work.
“He’s [Meslier] certainly got a fantastic basis to go from. He’s got all the attributes, but as we’ve seen you have to keep improving.
“To be at the top level you have to be relentless, you have to be dedicated, you have to make huge sacrifices and you have to keep pushing yourself every single year.”
Meslier has kept nine clean sheets in 29 Premier League games, including eight before his 21st birthday – a league record.
The France Under-21 international’s current Leeds United deal expires in 2023.
