Mills: Doherty will love latest Tottenham manager update

Matt Doherty could thrive at Tottenham if Nuno Espirito Santo implements a system with wing-backs.

That is the view of ex-England and Manchester City defender Danny Mills, speaking exclusively to Football Insider as Nuno remains the frontrunner to take over at Spurs.

Football Insider revealed on 25 June they have agreed personal terms with the ex-Wolves boss but the final details still need to be ironed out.

It represents a big U-turn by the Spurs hierarchy that has been driving by new managing director Fabio Paratici.

It was widely reported Nuno was not on Tottenham’s shortlist after his departure from Wolves.

Doherty made the move from Wolves to north London last summer but struggled in a Lilywhite shirt.

Asked whether he could rediscover his best form under Nuno, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “If you’re going to play him at wing-back and that’s his best position then yes.

“That’s what they’re probably looking at and it all depends on the system.

“It’s the same when you’re talking about players coming in. ‘Who’s the manager? What system are you playing? Does that suit me? Will it get the best out of me?’ All these sorts of things come into it.

“They have to get this managerial appointment sorted and sorted very, very quickly because at the moment it’s nothing short of a shambles.”

Doherty played 29 times across all competitions for Spurs across all competitions last summer but managed just 13 Premier League starts.

The Republic of Ireland international moved to the club for a reported £15million fee last August.
