Mills: Leeds handed 'absolutely huge' boost after Bielsa 'smoke and mirrors'
The Leeds United squad has been handed an “absolutely huge” boost after winning their final game before the international break, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender insisted there is “nothing worse” than heading into the break with a defeat.
Leeds beat Watford 1-0 at Elland Road to earn their first win of the Premier League season.
The Athletic‘s Phil Hay reported on October 4 that Marcelo Bielsa promised the non-internationals in the squad extra time off if they beat the Hornets.
“The win is absolutely huge,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“There’s nothing worse than going into the international break having just lost.

“All you want to do when you’ve just lost is to play immediately to try and write those wrongs, to get back on track.
“To go in with a win is vitally important.
“You use whatever motivational techniques you can.
“There will have been a plan no matter what and that will have not deviated too much.
“If it’s the right thing to do to have three or four days off, then it’s the right thing to do. You might add an extra day here or there but nothing major.
“Sometimes players just need something, that can be the managerial skills. If the manager says ‘If you win today, you’ll get a day off’ you were probably going to have the day off anyway but it’s just that extra carrot.
“The players will think ‘Ok, let’s work that little bit harder because we’ll get a day off’ but it actually might not have even mattered.
“A lot of it is psychological, just playing those little psychological mind games give you an edge so you do it.
“Those plans were probably in place no matter what. It becomes smoke and mirrors.”
