Mills makes 'exceptional' Liverpool claim after Klopp reveal

Liverpool can mount a serious title challenge if they keep their starting XI fit for the majority of the season, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Man City and England full-back insisted Liverpool’s first-choice team is “magnificent”.

The Reds have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season and are top of the table after Chelsea’s loss to Man City at weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won four of their first six league games this term and have drawn the other two – including Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Brentford.

Last season, they suffered a defensive injury crisis that saw Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams end the season as the first-choice centre-back pairing.

However, this season, they have remained relatively unscathed.

Klopp revealed in a press conference yesterday (September 27) that only Harvey Elliott and Thiago are currently unavailable.

Elliott suffered a dislocated ankle against Leeds United earlier this month while Thiago is sidelined until after the upcoming international break.

Asked for his assessment of Liverpool’s title hopes, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “If they keep everybody fit then they have a chance because they have some fantastic players.

“There issues is their strength in depth is not as strong as the others. That’s all it comes down to.

“The starting XI is exceptional, it’s magnificent. You can’t say any more than that.

“But they’ve got to get that starting XI on the pitch 90 per cent of the time. That’s where the difficulty comes in.”

After facing Porto in the Champions League, Liverpool host Man City at the weekend.

That is their final Premier League game before the October international break.
