Mills verdict on Aston Villa completing free agent signing after manager reveal
Danny Mills has claimed Aston Villa will not sign a free agent goalkeeper despite being without Emiliano Martinez for their next three games.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England goalkeeper insisted Martinez’s absence “won’t be a huge problem”.
Aston Villa released a statement on 29 August claiming Martinez and Emiliano Buendia would feature for Argentina against Venezuela and Brazil before returning back to the UK to complete a 10-day quarantine period.
That would mean the pair would miss Villa’s game against Chelsea after the international break.
However, as quoted by the Daily Mirror on 2 September, Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni revealed they would also play against Bolivia.
Aston Villa will therefore be without both of their players for Premier League games against Chelsea and Everton and a trip to Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup.
“It’s odd that this hasn’t been pre-agreed,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“That’s what I find strange about it.
“I think they’ll just make do with what they’ve got. It’s not worth bringing somebody in for what is effectively two games. That would be pretty pointless, in my opinion.
“It’s one of those where you don’t like it but you’ve got to suck it up for those games.
“Again, with a goalkeeper, you’re hoping for two games it won’t be a huge problem and you will be able to deal with it relatively easily.”

Martinez kept a joint club record of 15 Premier League clean sheets last season – his first campaign for the club.
He has conceded three times in three top-flight games so far this term.
