Mills 'wowed' by Nuno as two Tottenham exits completed

Danny Mills has praised Nuno Espirito Santo for making his mark on the Tottenham squad by getting rid of Erik Lamela and Toby Alderweireld.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England full-back admitted it would have been an “easy decision” to bin the veteran pair.

Lamela has joined Sevilla in a deal that has seen Spurs sign young winger Bryan Gil.

Meanwhile, Alderweireld has joined Qatari side Al-Duhail after seven years in north London.

“When a new manager comes in it’s an old adage new broom sweeps clean,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Nuno will have his own ideas, his own ways of playing and he’s set a marker down to say ‘Right, out with these guys’.

“They’re easy decisions to make to stamp your authority. That’s like ‘Wow, statement stuff’.

“Lamela has been on the fringes for a long time. Alderweireld is not getting any younger and has not been as good for the last couple of seasons.

“It’s an opportunity for the manager to say ‘I want some fresh blood in, let’s move them on and get some money in then maybe look to re-spend it’.”

Football Insider learned on 29 July Harry Winks could be the next to depart as he is in talks with join a Premier League club from Spurs.

As well as Gil, Tottenham have added goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini to their squad this summer.

In other news, Tottenham have opened preliminary talks to sign an England star.
