Milos Kerkez has finally disproved flop claims as his 80% Liverpool stat emerges

Milos Kerkez has faced huge criticism for his performances this season, but he was impressive as Liverpool lost to PSG at Anfield on Tuesday.

The Reds were dumped out of the Champions League when Ousmane Dembele’s brace made it 2-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate.

But there were positives for Arne Slot’s team, who had the European champions on the ropes for much of the game.

Kerkez was among a cohort of new signings last summer, arriving at Anfield in a £40million deal from Bournemouth.

The left-back was hugely impressive last season, but his Liverpool form since signing has left much to be desired.

Milos Kerkez’s impressive stats vs PSG

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider in October that Slot had serious concerns over Kerkez, and many of those issues have come to the fore.

The 22-year-old has seriously struggled to adapt to life at Anfield, with the speed of his meteoric rise appearing to have caught up with him.

The defender has been caught out of position countless times this season and has failed to recreate the attacking influence that had made him so impressive at Bournemouth.

PSG have announced a long-term partnership with WHOOP – a wearable technology set to provide performance insight to each player with the view of evolving approaches to physical preparation.

But on Tuesday, it was Kerkez who looked to have got his preparation for the clash spot on.

The Hungary international was up and down the left throughout the game, constantly racing back to make key interventions before delivering crosses at the other end.

Not all of his balls were great, but his intensity and willingness to keep making runs had the Anfield faithful on their feet.

All in all, he would create three chances, take three shots, make six recoveries, win three free-kicks and impressively, win 80 per cent of all of the duels he contested.

Kerkez may have even scored, after his back-post run was found by Mohamed Salah, but the left-back struck his effort well wide of the post.

Future bright for Kerkez

When they were signing Kerkez, Liverpool transfer chiefs would have been well aware that there was little downside to the signing.

The 22-year-old has certainly struggled this season, but he had already shown that he can perform in the Premier League, and it was only a matter of time.

The left-back will hope to have a more settled wing partner ahead of him next season, and will have had a season of experience under his belt.

Kerkez’s issues have only been a minute part of a tumultuous Liverpool campaign, and there are far greater worries to be addressed.
