Mings '100 per cent' returning to Aston Villa XI tonight after 'big' Athletic reveal - Phillips

Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings will “100 per cent” start against Southampton on Friday.

That is the view of former Claret and Blue Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Dean Smith’s “big call” to drop the 28-year-old from the XI which lost to West Ham.

According to The Athletic (November 3rd), Mings was “furious” with Smith’s decision to bench him on Sunday.

Ezri Konsa and Kortney Hause were chosen ahead of the England international.

However, as reported by the Express and Star’s Matt Maher, Konsa will miss Friday’s trip to Southampton after Villa failed in an appeal against the red card the defender received against the Hammers.

When asked by Football Insider who will likely replace Konsa, Phillips said: “Mings comes back in, 100 per cent.

“You don’t leave out an England international two games running if you’re Dean Smith.

“I can understand why he did it against West Ham though. Nobody should ever be too big to be dropped, even if Mings has been one of the first names on the team sheet in recent years.

“Villa are going through a tough time and sometimes you have to make tough calls.

“Mings has not been up to the standards he has set himself in previous seasons.

“It was a big call from Dean. When you look at the result, it backfired.

“I think it would have done Mings the world of good to come out of the team because he had a busy summer. He probably needed the rest.

“He will definitely start against Southampton and hopefully he goes back in hungry.”
