Sources: MK Dons beat Rangers to Robson signing as deal being completed today

MK Dons have beaten Scottish clubs including Rangers to the signing of Blackpool midfielder Ethan Robson, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The League One outfit have reached an agreement with the newly-promoted Championship side over a deal for Robson.

A Dons source has told Football Insider that the 24-year-old former Sunderland star is set to complete a loan move today.

That is a blow to Rangers and Motherwell, who both made enquiries about Robson’s availability earlier this year.

Robson, who has a year left to run on his Blackpool contract, has previous experience north of the border.

He featured 13 times in a loan spell with Dundee in the 2018-19 campaign.

Rangers leaned heavily on Steven Davis, 36, and Scott Arfield, 32, to work the levers in midfield in 2020-21.

Both had stellar seasons but their ages and the fact that their contracts expire next summer mean Rangers may well look for a long-term solution.

But that solution will not involve Robson as he moves to MK Dons who finished 13th in League One last term.

Dons manager Russell Martin has already added fellow midfielder Scott Twin to his roster ahead of next season.

A versatile midfielder, Robson is accomplished as a defensive pivot as well as a number 10.

He played both roles for Blackpool last term as they won promotion from the third-tier via the play-offs.

Robson featured 36 times for the Seasiders in all competitions but made just two starts after the turn of the year.

He signed for Neil Critchley’s side in August 2020 after being released by Sunderland.

He made 14 appearances for the Black Cats, the club where he rose through the ranks after coming through as an academy graduate.
