Mohamed Salah can displace Steven Gerrard in Liverpool history books against Atletico Madrid
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah could move closer to creating more history at Anfield and go ahead of Steven Gerrard in their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.
The Egyptian winger scored a late penalty as Liverpool beat Burnley 1-0 to maintain their winning start to the Premier League season.
Salah signed a new Liverpool contract in April to keep him at the club until the end of 2027, having won two Premier League titles and a Champions League among his many accolades.
Liverpool were knocked out by PSG on penalties in the Champions League last season at the round of 16 stage, and following a summer of heavy investment, the Reds are aiming to advance deeper into the competition this time around.

Mohamed Salah will move ahead of Steven Gerrard for Liverpool Champions League appearances
The Reds welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield with Salah expecting to move ahead of Gerrard in most appearances for the club in the Champions League, as per BBC Sport.
If he appears against Atletico Madrid, Salah would have made 74 appearances for the club in the competition ahead of Gerrard on 73.
Only former defender Jamie Carragher on 80 appearances would have amassed more for the club.
The 33-year-old already has scored the most goals, 44, and registered the most assists, 17, out of any Liverpool player in their Champions League history.
Salah remains key to Liverpool’s Champions League hopes
Despite Arne Slot’s options going forward, Salah remains one of the first players on the team sheet down the right flank.
Salah’s penalty at Burnley could prove crucial in the Premier League title race, and if Liverpool want to win the Champions League, they may rely on a moment from their star player.

Slot has the firepower to be able to compete with anyone with Europe, and Alexander Isak is yet to make an appearance for the club.
Atletico Madrid’s defensive minded approach will provide the ultimate test to Liverpool’s riches in attack and whether Slot can find the right balance among his options.
