Rodgers was wrong to bench Celtic player, should start every game until he is sold
It was quite disconcerting at first to hear from Brendan Rodgers after Celtic’s 5-0 win over Brechin that he had left Moussa Dembele on the subs’ bench for the game as the speculation surrounding his future was affecting his performance.
But then the thought occurred that if it had been a team like Rangers or Aberdeen that the Hoops had been facing in the cup then Dembele undoubtedly would have started the game.
The Hoops were able to get away with not picking Dembele for the starting line-up as it was a game they were always going to win against the team bottom of the Championship.
Dembele may well be slightly perturbed by the rumours surrounding his future, but he should play, and indeed start every Hoops game – injury permitting between now and when he leaves the club.
The 21-year-old is still by far the best striker at the club, even if his performances haven’t always shown it this season.
He is leagues ahead of the raw Odsonne Edouard, and with Leigh Griffiths sidelined with ankle injury there’s no excuse for Dembele not starting against Partick Thistle on Tuesday.
If he doesn’t start against Partick it would be confirmation that his days at Celtic Park are numbered and he will be leaving before the end of the transfer window.
Brendan Rodgers should make the correct decision and start Dembele regardless of the speculation.
