‘Embarrassing’ – Chris Sutton rips into Rodgers snub after Celtic cup final win
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton is unhappy that Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers was overlooked as manager of the year despite leading the Hoops to a second consecutive domestic treble.
The Bhoys added the Scottish Cup to their trophies following a 2-0 win over Motherwell in the final, and on his personal Twitter account after the game Sutton questioned why Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke had won the honour instead of Rodgers.
“Funny old game, double treble and Brendan Rodgers didn’t win manager of the season, it’s embarrassing really, must be easy making history” Sutton said.
Despite the lack of individual awards, Rodgers will be satisfied enough that he lead the Hoops to Scottish football history, as they became the first team to win the domestic treble two seasons in a row.
Football Insider verdict
It is a bit odd that Rodgers was overlooked for the managerial awards when you consider that he has repeated his achievements of last season, leading the Hoops to a treble. The football might not have been as good as last season but that was a one-off, as the Bhoys were never going go to through an entire league season unbeaten once again. Perhaps Kilmarnock’s Clarke was given the awards as he has turned the club around very quickly, from relegation candidates to fifth in the league table, but that shouldn’t diminish from the Hoops’ incredible achievements, which will go down as legendary in the club’s history. What Rodgers and Celtic have done in the last two seasons must go down as one of the greatest feats in Scottish football history, and it is strange that Rodgers will lack personal recognition for leading the Hoops to more glory in Scotland.
