Former Arsenal star and current Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has slaughtered Tottenham for their performance against Manchester City when predicting the club’s midweek clash away at Brighton.

The Lilywhites came up against the newly-reigned Premier League champions off the back of some impressive form, with four successive victories and just one defeat in their last 22 outings across all competitions, an impressive run which stretched back to the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of City at the Etihad Stadium.

However Spurs were second best in every department at Wembley on Wednesday, suffering a 3-1 defeat, a result which left Merson stunned.

Predicting Mauricio Pochettino’s men to bounce back to winning ways with a 3-1 win against the Seagulls, he wrote in his column for Sky Sports: “Tottenham were embarrassed by Man City.

“They got a complete runaround, bar five or 10 minutes in each half. I’ve never seen anything like it.

“Brighton had a go against Crystal Palace, but defensively I’m not sure. I don’t think they’ll keep Harry Kane quiet, so I can’t see anything but a Spurs win.”

Football Insider verdict

There has been just one other time this season in which Tottenham have been so utterly outplayed and that was the visit the the Sky Blues. Merson is not exaggerating when he says Pochettino’s men were embarrassed, for City barely broke a sweat against a side who last season were pushing for a Premier League title. Really, it came down to Spurs having an off day and City being on top of their game after some disappointing performances in recent weeks. The focus turns to Brighton now, a game which the Lilywhites will see as a chance to regain confidence, before the crunch FA Cup semi final against Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday.
