With new striker deal all but done, Orta is making his biggest mistake yet

COMMENT
Leeds United are on the verge of signing a striker – but Victor Orta is about the make the biggest mistake yet since becoming director of football at Elland Road.
Football Insider can exclusively reveal that Leeds have agreed a deal to snap up Leyton Orient striker Sam Dalby, who will undergo a medical with the Championship club on Tuesday with his move to Elland Road all but done.
And although Thomas Christiansen’s side is crying out for a centre-forward – 18-year-old Dalby is simply not the answer.
The teenage forward is tipped for big things at Orient but has barely kicked a ball in his senior career and has only found the net once in the Football League when he scored last season against Crawley.
As a result of his inexperience, Dalby will hook up with Leeds’ Under-23s side and is very much seen as a signing for the future.
But why does Orta insist looking at the future when the present is as good as it has been for well over a decade?
Leeds are within touching distance of being a team that can really mount a serious challenge for promotion. If Christiansen can get that side to finish in the top six then who knows what can happen in the play-offs.
The £15million pocketed in Chris Wood’s sale to Burnley in the summer simply has not been invested well enough and while it is fine to make plans for the future by snapping up highly-rated youngsters, the Yorkshire club must not lose sight of what is happening right now, in the present.
Christiansen is one striker and maybe one defender away from having a top six-worthy squad that by the time August comes around later this year, could be emerging out of the tunnel at Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge or Anfield.
Orta is losing sight of what needs to be done right now at Elland Road, too much emphasis on the future means that the director of football will lose track of what is going on right now.
In other Leeds United news, fans on Twitter are furious after it was announced that yet another midfielder has left Elland Road.
