Newcastle £39m reveal after record-breaking update

Newcastle United increased their commercial revenue by £39million last season after posting a record-breaking turnover, sources have told Football Insider.

The Tyneside club have been making efforts to improve their commercial income in a bid to challenge the top Premier League sides financially.

The north-east giants’ accounts for 2023-24 revealed their overall turnover surged from £250million to £320million – marking a 28 per cent increase.

Their commercial revenue improved from £47million in 2022-23 to £86million last season following their lucrative deals with Sela, Noon and Adidas.

The club’s broadcast revenue rose from £165million to £184million, while their matchday income increased from £38million to £50million after featuring in the group stages of the Champions League.

Eddie Howe‘s side have struggled to comply with the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in recent years and were forced to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson last summer to balance the books.

However, their losses before tax fell dramatically from £72million in 2022-23 to £11million last season, with top-flight clubs only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

Newcastle’s wage bill jumped from £187million to £219million in 2023-24 after signing Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall for more than £150million.

Newcastle must generate £500m to rival top Premier League clubs

The Tynesiders failed to qualify for Europe last season following their seventh-place finish in the top flight.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Newcastle must generate more than £500million in revenue a season to compete at the top of the Premier League.

They remain significantly down on Manchester City’s numbers after the English champions posted a Premier League record revenue of £715million and a £413million wage bill for 2023-24.

Howe’s side currently sit sixth in the top-flight table, three points behind fourth-place Man City after 27 matches.

Newcastle could land a £100million windfall if they qualify for the Champions League and compete well in the competition next season.

Newcastle could close Premier League financial gap with new stadium

Football Insider revealed on 7 February Newcastle could close the financial gap on their Premier League rivals by executing their plans for a new stadium.

They have been considering plans to either build a new facility or expand St James’ Park, which has been their home since 1892.

The Telegraph reported on 4 February the Newcastle board are understood to be on the verge of recommending the construction of a new £1.2billion stadium as the best option to their Saudi Arabian owners.

The proposal would see the development overlap the current Leazes Stand and have a capacity of just under 70,000, making it significantly bigger than the 52,000 St James’ Park holds.

The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) will make the final decision on the project, with the stadium expansion option expected to cost around half of the new stadium plans.
