He is now being linked with a sensational switch to St James Park as he reaches the latter stages of his career and he previously worked under Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez at Liverpool.
Reina continued to be a key figure last season for Napoli and kept 14 clean sheets in 48 appearances.
Meanwhile, the Magpies are looking to bolster their squad as they prepare for a Premier League return.
Football Insider verdict:
Reina would be a fantastic addition to the Newcastle side and it’s likely he would dislodge Karl Darlow as the number one option. The 34-year-old is still a top-class option despite his age and would bring valuable experience to the Magpies. The north-east club want to establish themselves back in the top flight and under Benitez will have aspirations of a top-10 finish soon. Reina is the sort of marquee signing that can help get them there and he has also proved he has all the qualities to succeed in England. The Spaniard is strong in possession and also a brilliant shot stopper, which has helped him become a major favourite of Benitez.
In other Newcastle transfer news, they are in talks with Chelsea about a loan move for their 19-year-old.
