Newcastle are already paying for disastrous summer transfer window as data uncovers key issues

Newcastle should have done more to upgrade their squad during the summer transfer window as their defeat to Arsenal uncovered an issue.

The Toon threw away a one goal lead inside the final minutes of the match, as Gabriel headed home a 96th minute winner for Arsenal.

Newcastle’s win over Wolves is their only success in the Premier League this season as despite keeping three clean sheets, Eddie Howe’s side are struggling to score goals.

Nick Woltemade has scored two in two home matches, but the German is lacking support from his new team mates, and Newcastle failed to build on his goal against Arsenal.

Stats show Newcastle’s alarming drop off in 2025/26

Newcastle’s summer was dominated by the Alexander Isak saga, though the Toon did not do enough to add depth to their squad.

Summer arrivals Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa are out injured, whilst Howe has left Anthony Elanga on the bench for the past three Premier League games.

Newcastle have had a busier start to the campaign than usual due to their participation in the Champions League, which they did not have to contend with last season.

In previous fixtures against Arsenal at St James’ Park, Newcastle have been ferocious and on the front foot.

Arsenal have struggled to cope with the intensity that Newcastle play with, but the Gunners could have had a goal or two before Woltemade’s opener.

The intensity though between this season and last season has dropped off, and Newcastle currently rank bottom of the Premier League table for tackles won per 90, whilst Woltemade may be helping in the ariel duels column.

Stats/Season2024-252025-26
Duels Won per 904.274.30
Ground Duels Won per 904.274.30
Aeriel Duels Won per 901.151.65
Tackles Won per 900.870.63
Newcastle stats in key duel metrics in the 2024-25 season and 2025-26 season, per 90.

Eddie Howe must address midfield depth

Bruno Guimaraes, who’s been the subject of contract talks, has played 90 minutes in all but one match this season.

Sandro Tonali has only not started Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win over Bradford, whilst Joelinton has only missed two matches this season.

Ramsey’s injury problems have not helped matters, but Howe has been reluctant to use Joe Willock of the bench this season.

19-year-old Lewis Miley has been given greater opportunities to start than Willock, as Howe cannot rely on the same midfield three each game.

Howe is also short in other areas of his squad, with William Osula the current back-up to Woltemade and 35-year-old Kieran Trippier will now have to deputise for the injured Tino Livramento.

Newcastle’s lack of transfer business and the congested fixture schedule means Howe may have a difficult campaign ensuring his squad can compete fully in each contest.
