‘Newcastle are embarrassing’ – fans explode after James Trafford transfer update
Newcastle fans reacted in unison in their response to a major update on the club’s pursuit of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.
Newcastle have maintained a long-standing interest in Trafford, particularly during his standout campaign for Burnley last season.
He put his name into the history books after keeping an extraordinary 29 clean sheets, as Burnley equalled Port Vale’s Football League record of 30, set back in 1953–54.
Football Insider revealed Newcastle have already had bids turned down for Trafford but remain keen to return with an improved offer. Burnley, however, are reportedly holding firm on their £40 million valuation of the player.
Talks have stalled in recent weeks, and in a fresh twist, Manchester City are said to have entered the race to sign the England youth international. Now, another update has further fuelled the frustration among Newcastle fans amid what’s already been a challenging transfer window.
Newcastle prepared to move on from James Trafford deal
Craig Hope of the Daily Mail revealed on X (19 July) that Newcastle are now “prepared to move on” from their pursuit of Burnley goalkeeper Trafford.
He added that the deal is not “dead” just yet, but the club are currently content with their goalkeeping options. Manchester City’s renewed interest in the player has also added what Hope described as a “complication.”
Man City have a £40m buy-back clause for Trafford, having sold him to Burnley in 2023, which may explain Burnley’s firm stance in demanding the full value.
With Ederson heavily linked with a move away from the Etihad, City will likely look to re-sign Trafford as a replacement, potentially accelerating their interest despite Newcastle’s long-standing admiration for the England youth international.

Newcastle fans hit out after latest Trafford setback
It’s been a frustrating summer so far for Eddie Howe’s side, who have missed out on several priority signings despite landing Anthony Elanga earlier in the window.
Newcastle’s pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo came to nothing after the Brentford forward made it clear he prefers a move to Manchester United.
Meanwhile, the club continue to search for a new striker following Callum Wilson’s departure at the end of his contract. However, reports suggest Hugo Ekitike has now agreed personal terms with Liverpool, despite Newcastle already submitting a bid, which is yet another blow for the club’s transfer plans.
Now, with their primary goalkeeper target potentially slipping away as well, Newcastle fans have voiced their growing frustration online.
One supporter wrote: “What a pathetic state of affairs. The optics of this deal are showing just how amateurish our transfer team are, it’s EMBARRASSING” and another added: “Pathetic at this point. Don’t know what they’re doing, genuinely.”
