Newcastle backed to complete striker signing after Alexander Isak twist – expert

Newcastle United could cash in on Alexander Isak after completing the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho from Leicester City.

Iheanacho, 27, will leave the King Power when his contract expires on 30 June and is attracting interest from Newcastle on a free transfer.

However, they will face competition from the likes of Aston Villa after their director of football Monchi met with the Nigerian’s representatives, as revealed by Football Insider.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland striker Frank McAvennie explained that the arrival of Iheanacho could make room for Isak to leave this summer.

Newcastle’s main man found the net 25 times in 40 appearances last season and has been the subject of interest from the likes of Arsenal this summer.

Iheanacho, meanwhile, featured 26 times for Leicester last season, making just 12 starts and finding the net six times across all competitions.

In the 2022-23 season, his most recent in the Premier League, he scored eight goals in 35 appearances as Leicester were relegated.

However, McAvennie insisted that Iheanacho would fit straight in at Newcastle, labelling him a “top player” who would be “disappointed” in his performances last time out.

He’s the calibre of player they should be aiming for, I like him,” he told Football Insider.

I think he’s fallen away a bit last season, but he must be disappointed with himself because he’s a Premier League player.

He’s done well for Leicester during his time there and the fans will respect him if he goes because he stayed last season after they were relegated.

He’s not an out-and-out striker, he’s one of these players that’s going to be drifting.

They’ve already got a couple of strikers at Newcastle including Isak, so this means they might look to sell him.

If they’re bringing in players like Iheanacho they could sell him. It’s not a straightforward replacement, but he’s a top player.”
