Newcastle backed to win fight against Premier League after ‘appalling’ development – Kenny
Newcastle United are right to take a stand against the “appalling” standard of referring in the Premier League.
That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider with VAR firmly in the spotlight again.
On Monday (20 December) the Telegraph reported Newcastle will complain to the Premier League over poor refereeing standards.
This came after Newcastle were denied what looked like clear penalties against Manchester City and Liverpool.
The Magpies are also reportedly unhappy about James Maddison winning a penalty in their clash with Leicester on 12 December despite replays showing there was minimal contact.
“The VAR and standard of refereeing is letting people down,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Last weekend it was an absolute shambles. They are getting all of the major decisions wrong.
“It is good to see Newcastle coming out and saying something. If something isn’t said, it won’t get addressed.
“It needs addressing, simple as. It has to improve. If Newcastle and other teams come out and say something then something will happen.
“Surely the refs know these decisions aren’t right, some of them are appalling.
“It’s the worst it’s ever been in my opinion. Look at the Kane tackle against Liverpool, it’s a red all day.
“Then the Newcastle pen against City, honestly, it’s a joke.”

The Magpies remain on 10 points in the Premier League after only winning one game this season.
They are next in action against Man United on 27 December.
