Newcastle board remain behind Eddie Howe amid sack suggestions, remit for next season is clear

Newcastle United have no intention of parting company with manager Eddie Howe in the summer despite the team’s recent struggles, sources have told Football Insider.

The 48-year-old is facing growing pressure from supporters after Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby defeat to Sunderland, but the board are not planning any sort of knee-jerk reaction after that reverse.

Howe himself remains committed to the project on Tyneside, and sources say that his recent achievements in the job mean he still has plenty of credit in the bank in the eyes of the hierarchy.

However, the expectation for next season is that the Magpies will push for a return to European football, with continental qualification looking increasingly unlikely this time around.

Newcastle’s managerial situation has not changed amid their recent struggles, despite bookmakers placing Howe among the favourites to become the Premier League’s next casualty.

Newcastle fans at the end of their tether with Eddie Howe

Howe’s tenure at St James’ Park has had a transformative effect since he first came to the club in November 2021.

He and the Magpies’ PIF ownership group have helped the club to reach new heights on the pitch, with this year’s Champions League campaign their second foray into Europe’s premier club competition in the space of just three seasons.

Howe also led Newcastle to their first major domestic trophy since 1955 when they beat Liverpool in last year’s Carabao Cup final, and its clear that those exploits are continuing to safeguard his position in the eyes of the board.

However, the same cannot be said of the supporters, who have been growing increasingly frustrated at the perceived lack of progress that their team have made on the field this term.

Calls for Howe to lose his job have only grown stronger following a week that saw a 7-2 humbling at the hands of Barcelona and ended with a late defeat to their bitter rivals.

Nevertheless, the board remain firm in their stance that Howe is still the man to bring the club success, and there is no indication of that changing any time soon.

Can the Magpies still make the Champions League this season?

Newcastle’s chances of Champions League qualification for next season have been growing slimmer with every passing week of late, and Sunday was a hugely damaging day for them.

Their defeat, combined with Aston Villa’s victory over West Ham, has left the North East outfit with just a 0.06 per cent chance of finishing inside the top four, in the eyes of Opta’s supercomputer.

Their Europa League chances are only faring slightly better ahead of the final seven games of the league campaign, as they also stand at less than one per cent at the moment.

Newcastle’s campaign hasn’t played out the way that they would have hoped after a significant transfer spend last summer, but Howe still appears set to take charge of the team again next term.
