Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has set himself a deadline to make a huge decision on his future at St James’ Park, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that Benitez will decide on his future at Newcastle before the end of the season, which is now less than a week away.
It is understood that the Magpies are bracing themselves for D-Day because Benitez’s patience is starting to wear very thin with owner Mike Ashley, who has failed to fund an improvement of the playing squad upon it’s return to the Premier League.
The 2-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday is said to have the Spanish manager reeling as he demands more for the club and it’s fans.
Football Insider verdict
The fact that Newcastle have avoided a major fight to stay up this season just goes to show how good a manager that Benitez is. It’s fair to say that most of the teams in the relegation dogfight have better squads than Newcastle, who still pretty much have the same team that won the Championship title last year. Ashley promised Benitez his full financial backing after promotion was earned in 2017, which got fans very excited about their return to the Premier League. However, of course, Ashley failed to deliver and instead did a huge U-turn on that promise by saying that he had no funds to give Benitez. As soon as that owner is out of St James’ Park, the better. Benitez will sense if things aren’t going well in the summer and may quit on the eve of the 2018/19 campaign kicking off if he feels that he won’t be able to keep this side in the Premier League.
