Newcastle could sign 'big Lascelles upgrade' in January after source update - pundit

Kevin Campbell has claimed “quality” Wolves defender Conor Coady would be a “very good signing” for Newcastle.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 28-year-old would be a “big upgrade” on the Magpies’ current options.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that the Tyneside club have put Coady on their January shortlist as they look to strengthen their backline.

It will take a bid of around £30million to prise away the Wolves star, who is under contract until 2025.

Coady has earned seven caps since making his debut for Gareth Southgate’s England side in September 2020.

Newcastle have struggled to keep their opponents out this season, conceding the third-most goals in the Premier League.

The Tyneside club are in the relegation zone with four points and have failed to win a game this season.

Campbell claimed the Magpies “need leaders” if they are to avoid the drop this season.

“Coady is an all-rounder,” he told Football Insider.

“He is a quality player who is versatile he can play as part of a three or a four. That is a huge plus.

Of course, he is an England international and a club captain.

“Coady is a leader and Newcastle need leaders if they’re going to get out of their current predicament.

“I think he’d be a big upgrade on what they’ve got.

“He’d be a very good signing for them both on and off the field.”

Coady has been ever-present for Wolves so far this season.

The centre-half joined Wolves from Huddersfield in 2015.
