Newcastle senior player may have played final game, summer exit on the cards - report
Newcastle United defender Jesus Gamez may have played his final game for the club, according to a report.
The Newcastle Chronicle claims that Gamez, 32, is slowly regaining his fitness after undergoing surgery on an ankle issue earlier in the season, but due to Rafa Benitez having him well down the pecking order, he is likely to not play again.
It is understood that the former Atletico Madrid full-back’s deal is due to expire at the end of the season and it is unlikely that he will pen new terms with him making just 10 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies since signing in July 2016.
The senior player has made just three of those appearances this season, but has not featured since the 1-0 defeat to Brighton in September, which may now go down as his final outing for the Tyneside club.
Football Insider verdict
Gamez has had a torrid time since signing for Newcastle ahead of their campaign in the Championship. It’s quite a shock that he has not been able to get a foothold in the first-team as Benitez has liked to use Spanish players in his teams and with Gamez having a great amount of La Liga experience from spells at Atletico and Malaga. But it seems that he will leave and be forced to find a new club in the summer. England has not worked out for him so it’s likely that the full-back will return to Spain to see out the rest of his career.
