Newcastle discuss potential move for Barcelona attacker, PL rivals also in pursuit - report

By Danny Wright

Newcastle have held discussions about a potential swoop for Barcelona attacker Munir El Haddadi, according to a report.

The Guardian claims that Newcastle’s Premier League rivals Crystal Palace are also in pursuit of Munir, 21, who is facing an uncertain time at the Nou Camp after he returned from his loan spell at Valencia and is yet to feature in the Barca squad this season.

Munir was in top form at the Mestalla last season, scoring seven goals and supplying three assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.

Two of his goals came in separate clashes against his parent club Barcelona in La Liga.

Rafa Benitez has already made it clear that he has been left frustrated by the lack of progress he has been able to make in the transfer window so far this summer.

However a swoop for Munir will no doubt boost the fans as the Spain Under-21 international is regarded as one of the hottest young talents in La Liga.

Football Insider Verdict

Munir would be a very exciting addition to Benitez’s squad. He is young, fast and versatile, which is exactly what the Magpies could do with in their squad. Munir is someone who could perhaps push a player like Ayoze Perez or Christian Atsu out of the squad as he is that good. You don’t make the grade at Barcelona by being a poor player, and he could perhaps be the player that transforms the Magpies squad from a relegation candidate to someone who can challenge for a spot in the top-half of the Premier League table. Benitez’s links to Spain might help this deal come through but a loan deal might be the only cause of action for the Tynesiders, who haven’t spent a lot this summer.
